Peru must have been more interesting than the US this week, because we got to hear about something other than Black Friday, Michelle Obama’s (admittedly very lovely) dress, and the intimate lives of that couple that snuck into the State Dinner. Mostly, we got to hear about strikes and whether or not Beyonce is coming to Lima.
This week in Peru:
- A strike against corrupt local officials in Cajamarca. Five are injured (video footage)
- Union workers strike at Repsol’s Peru oil refinery for better benefits and an end to forced overtime
- People march for peace in Peru and karaoke for peace in Chile. It seems as though Chile and Peru are making up after their Spy vs. Spy fight.
- Meanwhile, the BBC Mundo takes the opportunity to analyze the state of spying in Latin America
- The female condom to go on sale in Peru next year. (Fun educational videos!)
- Quince Mil, a town in the Peruvian Amazon, becomes a case study for the pluses and minuses of modernization
This week in Latin America:
- Brazil’s Lula de Silva: “I don’t want any gringo asking us to let an Amazon resident die of hunger under a tree.” Seems to be in line with the proposed fund to help developing nations deal with climate change
- Banksy-esque political graffiti in Bogotaby an artist known only as Juega Siempre.
- All is not well in Honduras’ upcoming elections.
- Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia are also having pretty major elections coming up in the next few weeks. Google it to find out more, and I’ll have better information for next week’s installment.
