Another round of links from the news this morning:
- Photos of the flooding from Living in Peru.
- Ten helicopters should be arriving today to airlift stranded tourists out of Aguas Calientes, from RPP.com (in Spanish). Almost 2 thousand tourists have been stranded, as landslides have blocked the railway, and there aren’t sufficient hotels to house them all.
- The BBC’s story of the airlifts.
- Eight people have died and more than fifty wounded, and as expected, the monetary loss from tourism is also pretty huge, (both via RPP.com (in Spanish).
More to come….

To anyone planning a trip to CUSCO, the CITY IS OK, but you will not be able to visit the Sacred Valley, Machupicchu or do the Inca Trail. But there are several amazing places to visit in Cusco City.
IF YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER WHILE VISITING CUSCO, PLS EMAIL ME AT alucinante@hotmail.com
GRACIAS!!!!

Thanks Arya, I just read that Peru Rail estimates they won’t be reopening the railway for another two months (and in February the Inca Trail was going to be closed anyway, for cleaning).

Any update on the railway, the trail, or the Sacred Valley status? We’re going to be there the last week of March. We’d change dates if we could but are locked in.
Thanks, David

David, it sounds like Machu Picchu should be open for visitors in April, but I’m not sure if the hikes will be open. There are some other fantastic hikes nearby, though–if you’ve already booked flights to Cusco, look into hiking to Choquequirao, a nearby Inca citadel that doesn’t see many visitors despite it’s awesomeness.
